How to be good

To celebrate the randomness of this blog (as suggested by its name), I've decided to post something... random. A couple of weeks back, I've read How to be Good by Nick Hornby.

The story is about Katie, a GP and a self-proclaimed "good person", who's threatened by the fact that her husband David, a local newspaper columnist bearing the name "The Angriest Man In Holloway" (mad, sarcastic, etc.), is turning extremely good (give money to beggars, donate toys to shelters, adopt an 18 year-old homeless... the usuals). It's fun filled with wits, but that's beside the point.

Being good to the extreme is "the" way to go. That won't be the case if everyone shared some of their wealth with those unfortunate people, but most of us didn't. The unfortunates become more unfortunate because of insufficient help.

If watching others' generosity would make us realize how greedy we are, then someone should go extreme. Give 1000 bucks away every month. Give homes to the homeless. Donate. If they can afford it (have more than enough) why not? Be thankful. Be caring. Be good.

Written communication

Written communication involves any type of interaction that makes use of the written word. It is one of the two main types of communication, along with oral/spoken communication. Written communication is very common in business situations, so it is important for small business owners and managers to develop effective written communication skills. Some of the various forms of written communication that are used internally for business operations include memos, reports, bulletins, job descriptions, employee manuals, and electronic mail. Examples of written communication avenues typically pursued with clients, vendors, and other members of the business community, meanwhile, include electronic mail, Internet Web sites, letters, proposals, telegrams, faxes, postcards, contracts, advertisements, brochures, and news releases.

Ironically, the importance of good writing skills in the business world has become more evident even as companies rely increasingly on computers and other new technologies to meet their obligations. Indeed, business experts warn that any business's positive qualities from dedication to customer service to high-tech expertise will be blunted to some degree if they are unable to transfer that dedication and knowledge to the printed page. Writing ability is especially important in customer communication. Business proposals, status reports, customer documentation, technical support, or even e-mail replies all depend on clear written communication."

Better device management

One of the great things about PCs is how they let us use such a wide array of devices. In the past, you had to use several different screens to manage different types of devices. But With Windows 7, you'll use a single Devices and Printers screen to connect, manage, and use whatever printers, phones, and other devices you have on-hand.

A new technology in Windows 7 called Device Stage takes device management a step further. Device Stage helps you interact with any compatible device connected to your computer. From Device Stage you can see device status and run common tasks from a single window. There are even pictures of the devices which makes it really easy to see what's there. Device manufacturers can customize Device Stage. For example, if your camera manufacturer offers a custom version of Device Stage, then when you plug your camera into your PC, you could see things like the number of photos on your camera and links to helpful information.

FEATURES HELP WINDOW 7 HELP THE WAY YOU WANT IT

What's new in Windows 7:
Windows 7 was built around your feedback, so you'll see a lot of things you've asked for. You asked us to make everyday tasks faster and easier, to make your PC work the way you want it to, and to make it possible to do new things. And that's exactly what we're doing. See how it's coming to life
Faster & Easier
Improved taskbar and full-screen previewsThe taskbar at the bottom of your screen is what you use to launch programs and switch between them when they're open. In Windows 7 you can pin any program to the taskbar so it’s always just a click away, and you can rearrange the icons on the taskbar just by clicking and dragging. We’ve made the icons considerably bigger, too, so they’re easier to use. Hover over the icons and you’ll see thumbnails of every file or window that open in that program, and if you hover over the thumbnail, you’ll see a full-screen preview of that window. Move the cursor off the thumbnail and the full-screen preview disappears.
Works your way
Faster, more responsive performanceNobody likes to wait, so we all want our PCs to perform well. We looked at a number of ways to improve performance on PCs running Windows 7. We designed the operating system to be more responsive and simpler to use.
To improve performance, Windows 7 is designed to make PCs start up, shut down, resume from standby, and respond faster. To help you zip through your day, we’ve added new features to simplify the number of steps required to do common things. Some of the features that’ll help you save time include:
Windows Taskbar simplifies working with your applications and files
Jump Lists put the documents you want handy and the ones you’ve used recently a couple clicks away
We’ve also focused on making it more convenient to work with the operating system. For example, the Action Center gives you more control over how the operating system notifies you about system changes. You can recover more quickly from problems when they do occur because when you’re ready to address issues, Windows 7 will help you fix them.
New possibilities
Easier TV, movies, and videoWith a streamlined user interface and support for new content types and digital TV, Windows Media Center in certain editions of Windows 7 makes watching TV, movies, and other video content on your PC easier than ever. With a simple USB TV Tuner you can record and watch shows on your schedule. Windows Media Center has been updated to manage a single TV guide containing both standard and digital high definition TV shows.
You'll be able to find your favorite shows super-fast with new features such as turbo scroll. Just hold down the right-arrow key and you'll zip through content listings.

Windows 7 reviews

Windows 7 brings new features which make it easier for computers not only to get connected, but also to stay connected regardless of their location or type of network. These enhancements also enable IT professionals to meet the needs of their business in a secure, reliable, and flexible way.

  • DirectAccess uses IPsec to enables users to access a network without the need for a (VPN) connection. DirectAccess. This solution is particularly useful for providing authentication and encryption for communication across the internet. By it's nature this is a feature for domain users and requires Windows Server 2008.
  • Multiple active firewall profiles. The benefit is that firewall rules are based on the network to which each network adapter is connected, for example, Private, Public, or Domain. Let us suppose that you are at a station which supplies wireless connection. This is what happens, your VPN connection to the corporate domain network is protected by the Domain profile. While surfing the internet uses the Public profile.
  • Mobile broadband device support provides another consistent driver-based model for devices that are used to access a mobile broadband network. What's new is that users don't need to grapple with third-party software, Windows 7 takes care of business.
  • IPv6 provides the end-to-end addressing necessary for clients to connect to the enterprise network. If you are not yet ready to fully deploy IPv6, then you can use Intra-Site Automatic Tunnel Addressing Protocol (ISATAP), Teredo, and 6to4 to connect across the IPv4 Internet and to access IPv4 resources.
  • URL-based Quality of Service (QoS), which enables you to assign a priority level to traffic based on the URL from which the traffic originates.
  • BranchCache, which enables updated content from file and Web servers on a wide area network (WAN) to be cached on computers at a local branch office, increasing application response time and reducing WAN traffic.

HERE SOME BUZZ;

"All in all, Windows 7 is shaping up well. It's a far more modest release than Vista was, but it's no worse for that. The new OS introduces a compelling combination of welcome innovations and much-needed polish, and that's exactly what Microsoft needs right now. Vista's foundation was solid, and Windows 7 just makes it better."

wRitten CommunicatiOn?

  • This is more about how the communication will be done. I learn how to improve my communication skill likes how to be more clearly about the message that I want to send and not be out of control language.

  • Communication will be easier by using ABC, that is ACCURACY, BRIEF, and CLEAR. So that, I don't think too many words which will look impressive on paper. One things that we must avoid is exterminate jargon.

  • It is so dificult to understand and written should be natural as possible. The other things that should be avoid are redundant expression, negativity and also the passive voice. It should be active voice and don't forget to touch up our tone.

Experience In Uniten and my previous collage

My experience in UNITEN first is when the first time i came to this university for the registration day. What can I say about that day is the system of the admin of the University for the registration day is quite systematic from my previous collage. Then the orientation program was more relaxing because when I am in diploma in my previous collage on the orientation weeks was more ragging from knowing the places in the collage. In the whole weeks in my previous collage in the orientation day has make me so stress up and tired. But, in anyway it also have a quite a memories back then. Secondly, in Uniten the student in this university are more active and more competitive. I am afraid that I can't catched up with the skill or way of studying in this university. But anyway I am studying in this university now so is too late to regret or turning back. For now is, I should try my best and try to achieve the sucssesfulness in this university.

First impression and experience

My first impression before i came to Uniten i feel so much excited to continue study here. This university is so big and has many facilities that i can use. Then i can feel how the campus life is. Then my first day in Uniten quite bored because still don't get to know people yet. Then for the management i'm quite dissapointed actually because of the security guard that always stop me from going out late night. The security also always stop me because i don't have a sticker so they cannot let me parked inside and must parked outside. But overall life in Uniten its not that bad. There nothing perfect rite? So now the guard never stop me to entering my hostel nemore because i already has the sticker. Now i feel more exicted because i has lot of friends and going through so much experience here. I hope i can finish up my degree here n be the best that i can be.

writting for business

This is different, business writting. It would be a lot easier if they've teach us this since primary one. Ever since I can remember, I've always thought that writting is about impressing the readers with my long and flowery words. The fact is writting should be as simple as ABC; accurate, brief and clear. Keep it short and simple. Exterminate jargons, etc. It's similar to how we speak, with additional predefined formats.

It should be easier than it is, but having forced in exams to write a certain amount of words for an essay, most Malaysian can't help but to fill their writtings with jargons and redundancies so that the required number of words can be achieved (this sentence serves as a perfect example).

business english

business english, one of the subjects that i take for this sem. this class is different from the english class that i had took before. this class is more on how to communicate in public and in corporate view which it develope the courage to talk. what we can see to our people now is there was no guts in talking to public. this class benefit me on how to applying a job in a good way which i learn about cover letter, how to face an interview which is important step on the way to get a job. but i have to practice more on this. how can i talk if there are so many vocab that i dont know. 'KISS', which is the short form of 'keep it short and simple'. it's mean that we have to talk and write in a simple english which is easier to understand by the listener and the readers. i actually very rare studying this subject a home....
..continue later..i have no idea..
